Casa la Bodeguita takes its name from the small cave at the rear of the ground floor which is set out as a wine store – hence «The little cellar». The cave has been extended from its Roman origins and you can find myriad fossils in the rock.
The first and top floors are built against the remaining walls of the 12th-century Almohad castle that stood behind the site of the beautiful parish church of St. Peter the Apostle which was constructed in the late 18th-century. The house sleeps two comfortably in the first-floor bedroom and there is a simple sofa-bed in the ground floor lounge where a third or fourth guest could sleep.
As you come in, the lounge occupies the ground floor and has digital TV. At the rear behind the artesanal staircase is the cave with its collection of wine bottles, a table and two padded stools – a great place for a cool drink as it maintains a constant comfortable temperature year-round. Ascending to the first floor you’ll find the double bedroom with ample wardrobe space and digital TV. The top floor comprises the kitchen with microwave, hob, washing machine and fridge, shower room and the dining area, again with its own digital TV. It is air-conditioned and for the rare occasions that you need it there’s an electric heater on the ground floor.
Peñaflor is a great base to explore the Vega and is well served by bars and restarants, in some of which english is spoken and there are several supermarkets within a short stroll. During the high summer, the local swimming pool is a true oasis with plenty of shade under the trees and a bar which serves tapas and barbie-style food if you’re peckish.
In Roman times the town (which is on the banks of the Guadalquivir – «the Great River») was called «Celti», a name which occurs in many local business names. Its origins go back to prehistory through the Roman republican and imperial periods through the Visigoths and Moors and into the Christian era. Many of the local churches boast extensive collectons of roman masonry and memorial tablets whist the historic and beautiful cities of Seville and Córdoba are around 40 minutes from the local train station. Just 15 minutes to the north is the spectacular Sierra Morena with its plains, forests, ranches, lakes and streams where you can enjoy cooler temperatures and great tapas.
